New lawyer comes aboard in Bashara case

Posted: Updated:
A man charged with arranging the murder of his wife at their suburban Detroit home has a new lawyer.

Michael McCarthy will represent Robert Bashara, along with attorney Lillian Diallo. A Wayne County judge approved the court-appointed assignments Tuesday, April 15.

Judge Vonda Evans says she chose that date because tax day symbolizes closing out the old and starting the new."

McCarthy may be recognized from the Tucker Cipriano murder case. He represented Cipriano's co-defendant, Mitchell Young.

Bashara is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jane Bashara in 2012. Her body was found in her Mercedes-Benz in Detroit, but police believe she was strangled at her home in Grosse Pointe Park.

A handyman, Joe Gentz, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, saying he killed Jane Bashara on orders from her husband.

Robert Bashara is in prison for trying to have Gentz killed in jail.

Judge Evans has scheduled jury selection to begin on October 6. The pool of 150 people will be given questionnaires and questioned extensively by prosecutors and the defense team to "guarantee a fair trial," as Judge Evans put it in court.

Sixteen people will be chosen.

Motions will be heard in September.
