Dump truck driver issued summons in crash that killed mom of 3

Posted: Updated:
ARLINGTON, Va. - Arlington County police say the driver of a commercial dump truck who hit and killed a mother in front of her children was issued a summons Friday—and it’s a move that has outraged some residents in the area where the accident happened.

They say 33-year-old Marvin Valladares of Manassas was issued a summons for failure to pay full time and attention.  Valladares was behind the wheel of a dump truck that hit and killed 39-year-old Jennifer Lawson on Little Falls Road back in February.  Police say Lawson had just put one of her three children into a car seat in her minivan when she was struck.  She was standing on the driver’s side of the van when it happened.

Valladares is due in court again next month.  He could plead guilty or face a trial, where the maximum penalty would be 10 days in jail or a $100 fine.

Dep. Chief Daniel Murray said Valladares was not under the influence of alcohol or any other substance at the time of the accident, and there was no indication of excessive speed or distracted driving.

“This is an absolute tragedy,” said Murray.  “Nobody disputes that.  There are no winners at all in this.”
