Former cop pleads guilty to bribery in jail lockup sex case

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A former Chicago cop pleaded guilty last week to bribery for promising a male prostitute early release from jail in exchange for sex, according to prosecutors.

Nelson Stewart pleaded guilty April 3 to one felony count of bribery, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Stephen Campbell. He was sentenced to 30 months' probation and fined $434.

Stewart, then 59, was a lockup keeper at the Harrison District station at the time of the June 2012 incident, the Chicago Sun-Times reported previously.

The victim was a 30-year-old man arrested June 6 in the 4500 block of West Monroe Street and taken to the lockup after he flagged down an undercover cop and offered to perform sex for $20, officials said.

Stewart told the inmate that if he did him a "favor" he could be released later that day, prosecutors claimed. Stewart told the victim he controlled the paperwork at the district, according to a police report.

Stewart performed oral sex on the man and the man performed oral sex on him, prosecutors said.

After the victim reported the incident to a watch commander, the police Internal Affairs Bureau was contacted. The victim identified Stewart in a lineup, prosecutors said.

Biological samples submitted to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab matched Stewart's and the victim's DNA, prosecutors said.

He was originally charged with custodial sexual misconduct, bribery, and official misconduct, according to prosecutors.

Stewart resigned from CPD in October 2012, a police spokesman said.
