CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago Police shot and killed a man in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side Monday evening.

The shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. in the 2500 block of West 50th Street, according to Larry Merritt. He is the spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings.

Police were responding to a domestic disturbance call at the time of the shooting. The police union spokesman says the suspect was on probation for domestic battery and kidnapping and was violating the order of protection.

FOX 32 confirmed the suspect's identity as Hector Hernandez, 21, of the 5200 block of South Maplewood Avenue. Police said when officers arrived, Hernandez was on the front porch holding a baby and a backpack, and he told them he had a gun in the backpack.

A male relative then stepped outside and "an altercation ensued between the two," according to police. They said the two ended up inside the residence during the fight, and a person who lived in the house took the baby. Police said officers followed the two men inside, where Hernandez picked up multiple knives and threatened police and the relative.

Officers ordered Hernandez to put the knives down, and he moved toward police "in an aggressive manner." Police opened fire on the victim "in fear for the life of officers and occupants in the residence," killing him, according to the statement from police.

The IPRA is investigating.
