HOPE UPDATE: Money pouring in for dog set on fire

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Veterinarians in the Tampa Bay area continue to be optimistic about the recovery of a little dog that was set on fire.

Her name is Hope, and we've been following her progress ever since the incident on March 20. Many have been touched by Hope's inspiring recover. We're seeing new video of her from inside the hospital.

She's walking around, eating, and even barking at the occasional passing car, doctors told FOX 13 on Friday.

Dr. Sonja Olson said she never expected Hope to improve this rapidly.

"She's still in a very intensive phase of wound care and of medications, but the great thing is she's eating, she's drinking, and she's off of IV fluids," Olson said. "She's on oral medications. She's on topical medications."

Doctors from BluePearl gave the dog an antiseptic wash earlier this week, which helped to remove dead skin and bad tissue. She's also been getting laser therapy treatment.

But the biggest concern has always been Hope's eyes, Olson said.

"Over the last few weeks, the ophthalmologists have been saying that her eyes are healing beautifully," Olson said. "She might have some scarring, but they're hoping she'll have full vision return."

Police in Arcadia are still investigating the burning incident. The public has stepped in to help with Hope's recovery, pledging more than $40,000 to the Hardee Animal Rescue Team to cover the costs.
