Park Police investigating sexual assault of woman at park in Georgetown

WASHINGTON -

A sexual assault in a popular D.C. park has neighbors on high alert.

It happened Tuesday night at the Glover-Archbold Park just off Foxhall Road and Canal Road in Georgetown.

Police say at around 8 p.m., a woman was walking by herself when a man attacked her. The victim tells police the man forced her into a wooded area of the park and sexually assaulted her. She says he then ran away in an unknown direction.

Jill Thorpe has lived in the area for 15 years and says she and her neighbors use the park all the time.

She says the crime has her concerned about her safety.

"I'm not going down there, even in the daylight,” she says. "8 o'clock, I bet it was dusk, and that's a little bit on the edge, but it makes me very worrisome about going down there alone even with my dog."

The victim tells police she didn't see where her attacker went, and she wasn't able to give police a description.

Police are hoping someone else may have seen something that could help them in their investigation.
