PennDOT Spokesman Suspended Without Pay

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

He's a familiar face at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation who you saw a lot this past winter. Now, he's suspended without pay. And his lawyer says he's not exactly sure why.

FOX 29's Jeff Cole broke this story. Here's what he's learned.

Nick Martino is likely the highest-profile PennDot worker in the region. He's the face of the sprawling transportation agency when the winter weather blows in.

But now, FOX 29 News has learned, Martino has been walked out of PennDOT. His $83,000 a year salary has been halted.

"I know that he was suspended on March 27th, and we don't know why," said his attorney, Anthony Voci, who handles both civil and criminal cases.

Voci called FOX 29 after we spoke on the phone with Martino, who confirmed his suspension and loss of pay and quickly hung up.

Voci says Martino was called into a March 27 meeting at PennDOT's King of Prussia offices, questioned and escorted out.

"They made a vague allegation about inappropriate actions towards an employee. My understanding is that this was a disgruntled employee," Voci said.

A PennDOT spokesperson declined to comment on what he said was a personnel matter or any issue related to Martino's suspension.

Voci claims he has pressed PennDOT for answers by letter about his high-profile client.

"It would seem like a pretty severe penalty to kick somebody out of a building where he's been for the better part of 20 years and not pay him for a personnel issue," Cole asked.

"Yeah, it's very odd. You would think after 18 years of distinguished service that he would be entitled to a little bit more than what he has gotten thus far from PennDOT, but we're hopeful," Voci said.

Again, PennDOT isn't talking, and Martino's lawyer says he's not exactly sure about what's going on here. There appears to be more to what's going on here, and we'll try to get it in the days ahead.
