ASHBURN, Va. -

An Ashburn, Va., man has been charged with killing his estranged wife and investigators say he staged it to look like a suicide.

On the morning of March 20th, 43-year-old Michelle Castillo's children woke up at their home along Belmont Station Drive and couldn't find their mother. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, they called their father, Braulio Castillo, for help. He and a neighbor searched the home.

Castillo looked downstairs while the neighbor searched upstairs. When neither reported finding anything, a neighbor called police.

Sheriff's deputies found Michelle's body hanging in the basement bathroom. It appeared she had taken her own life.

However, investigators obtained surveillance video from several neighboring homes and it turns out Braulio was seen entering the house the night before, just about ten minutes before Michelle came home for the night with her children. He was seen leaving around midnight.

According to the medical examiner’s report, it appears that this was a homicide and not a suicide. Authorities believe Braulio Castillo made it look like his wife killed herself.

Posts on social media reflect a very active woman who was involved with her children, her church, and running. Friends say she was planning a trip to Puerto Rico.

Her next-door neighbor says she was confident all along that the vibrant mother would not have claimed her own life. She told FOX 5, “She was just so full of life. Everything was about her children and how she has to invest in them and their future. I couldn’t consider [her committing suicide] for a second. The only thing I could think of was that something terrible happened, but we just didn’t know it.”

According to Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman, the Castillos had a history of domestic disputes.

Braulio Castillo is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
