Attorney for Beverly Hall asks to suspend racketeering trial

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The attorney representing Atlanta's former school superintendent in a standardized test cheating and racketeering case is asking to suspend her trial for medical reasons.

Beverly Hall's attorney filed a motion for continuance in Fulton County Superior Court on Monday. In an affidavit, Dr. Laura Weakland says Hall will be physically and mentally unable to participate in the trial for six to eight months while she undergoes cancer treatment.

The motion says Hall was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and the disease spread to other parts of her body since then. Hall is asking to continue her trial until her physician clears her to participate in the defense portion.

Hall is one of 35 Atlanta Public Schools educators accused of participating in a widespread test cheating and racketeering conspiracy.
