DALTON, Ga. (AP) - Whitfield County Fire Chief Carl Collins plans to retire from the department in northwest Georgia.

The Daily Citizen reports that when Collins joined the newly formed Whitfield County Fire Department in 1977, he says he only planned to volunteer for a few years.

But Collins had a passion for firefighting and says that he enjoyed every aspect of it.

Five years after joining the fire department, Collins became its chief, a position he has held for more than 30 years.

The 64-year-old Collins says he plans to retire from the position on May 30.
