Chandler Fire Department kicks off drowning prevention campaign

Posted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. -

So far this year we've already seen several drownings and near drownings, and the pool season is not even in full swing.

Chandler fire kicked off it's drowning prevention campaign Saturday morning.

"When the weather starts getting nice kids are outside looking for things to play, they get hot; they look for water and they find it," said battalion chief brad miller.

Firefighters and volunteers met at chandlers desert oasis aquatic center Saturday morning.

Everyone got bags full of water safety kits. And they fanned out across the city, hanging the kits on front doors.

Firefighters have amassed an army of volunteers and on Saturday they are expected to visit 10 15 thousand homes.

"I think it is important that people are aware of water safety. In two inches you can drown and I think it is really important in Arizona that people are aware of that and I just want to support that chandler fire department as well," said Nicole Patti.

This is the fourth year of the fire department's drowning prevention campaign; it's Justin Tsang's first time volunteering for it.

"Helping out the community. Giving my time back to the community," said Tsang.

Firefighters believe it works over the past few year they say the statistics have improved.

"Most of the time we find that they just don't realize what a water hazard is and once it is pointed out to them they want to do the right thing and they want to make it safe and keep the kids safe," said miller.

In addition to encouraging adults to enter supervise kids around water the water safety kits also encourage parents to learn CPR.

So far this year, chandler has not seen any drownings or near drownings.
