PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

He was a Marine injured by an explosive device and on Friday he visited his former high school here in the valley.

But he did not know that the school had a big surprise for this hometown hero.

"I haven't been back to this high school since I graduated and being here seeing all these students I love working with these kids," said Josh Sweeney.

Josh Sweeney, a paralympic gold medal hockey player, came home to Ironwood high school in Peoria.

After scoring the winning goal against the Russians in the paralympic games his wife watched from the crowd.

"I was screaming so loud and everybody was so proud because they had lost to Russia just a couple days before, but it was pretty priceless," said his wife Amber Sweeney.

"I doubt I'll ever get a day where I say I wish I didn't see that," said Josh.

At Ironwood High School, they will hang Sweeney's picture in the school's hall of fame.

"if we work hard enough we could do what he did and pursue whatever we want to do," said a student Anysse Chavez.

This hometown hero an inspiration, as a marine he was injured by an IED overseas. And learned from mom to never give up

"My family had always raised me with a "You can't cry over spilled milk attitude" so when it happened I was upset and I had to deal with that but I also knew I had a life to live and wanted to do more than just live for me," said Josh.

"I was looking at the crowd and looking at the students because I wasn't sure how they would connect with him, and they did and they were enjoying hearing his story and I hope he can be an inspiration to them," said Josh's mother Tracy Sweeney.

Texas is home for Josh and his wife Amber. Josh says he really enjoys talking to kids about pursuing their dreams.
