Professor '100 Mile Joe,' who overcame obstacles as a youth, runs to help student scholarship fund

Posted: Updated:

A professor at Shenandoah University is running one-hundred-miles on Friday - and it's all to raise money for his music students!

Joe Lovinskey, also known as 100 Mile Joe, teaches French-horn at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

He's an avid runner and has run a handful of so-called ultra-marathons since retiring from the Army brass quartet.

Lovinskey faced hardship growing up the son of Haitian immigrants in a poor area of Miami, Fla.

He struggled financially, and through periods of homelessness. Eventually he attended the Juilliard School and had a successful career in the U.S. Army.

The money he's raising will go to a scholarship fund for students who play the French-horn at the Shenandoah Conservatory.
