Rabid coyote attacks woman and dog in Rockland County

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A morning walk with her dog quickly turned into a terrifying experience for a Rockland County woman. She actually put herself in between her pet and a coyote as it advanced on them in a driveway and attacked her.

Mary Lou Gardner is recovering but has to receive rabies shots after a 50-pound coyote suddenly lunged at them and bit her. She wouldn't leave her dog, and the coyote would leave her, either. Mary Lou's neighbor Joe Knizeski heard her screams. He saw the coyote jumping on her back, so he started to distract it. It got off Mary Lou and started chasing Joe.

But police arrived within minutes and killed the coyote, which tested positive for rabies.

Mary Lou now has to have a series of shots. She is a bit battered and bruised but thankful.

Police say they haven't seen a recent rise in coyote calls but are asking residents to call their non-emergency number if they see any.

Wednesday was Mary Lou's birthday. She said rabies shots weren't exactly the kind of shots she was expecting to have.
