Federal judge questions abortion restrictions

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A federal judge has cast doubt on whether Arizona has sufficient evidence to prove its new restrictions on the most common abortion drugs benefit women.

Judge David C. Bury heard arguments on Wednesday in Tucson on a request by Planned Parenthood Arizona to temporarily block new abortion restrictions that are set to take effect on Tuesday.

Bury did not make a decision. But he did question whether the state had enough evidence to prove that requiring the most common abortion-inducing drug to be administered only at the FDA-approved dosage and in a clinic instead of at home would benefit women's health. He also questioned why women whose health is threatened by a pregnancy are not exempt.

The new rules are based on a 2012 law.
