New poll: Bowser gains ground on Gray in DC mayoral race

Posted: Updated:
Early voting is underway, and according to a new poll by the Washington Post, the primary battle for Mayor of D.C. has narrowed to a two-person race between incumbent Vincent Gray and D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser.  According to the poll, they're in a dead heat for the Democratic nomination.

The new data indicates Bowser has more than doubled her support since early January, gaining the backing of 30 percent of likely voters.  Meanwhile, Gray's support remains at 27 percent following new corruption allegations from federal prosecutors earlier this month.

The Post reports that based on the new polling, Bowser is the best positioned of the eight candidates to capitalize on concerns about Gray's honesty.

FOX 5's Matt Ackland spoke with Mayor Gray after the new poll numbers were released.  He said the new poll looks like he and Bowser are in a dead heat, but added that his poll numbers "are a little different from that."  Gray pointed out that he has the most campaign money left, but wouldn't say how he plans to spend it.

Meanwhile, Bowser told Ackland she plans to keep knocking on doors until Election Day, which is next Tuesday.  Bowser admitted that much of that time will be spent in Ward 5.

"We're feeling strong," Bowser said.
