PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A man who shot a Phoenix police officer back in 1992 is hoping to get paroled. On Monday, we heard from the suspect as well as the officer who was shot.

"Yes, I'm guilty.  I am guilty, I committed that crime, I did."

Still, Jaime Bernal is asking the clemency board to relieve him of part of the 28 year sentence he's serving for shooting police officer Joe Logan.

"I won't ever make an excuse for what I did.  I know what I did, but I didn't know who it was.. I didn't know.. I never knew until the next day," he said.

Bernal says he'd been drinking and now understands the hurt he's caused.

Logan sent his thoughts to the board via video.

"He did the execution, ran up to the car, shot me point blank going through the neck and across the spinal column, crushing  the spinal cord, leaving me a quadriplegic," he said.  "By letting the suspect parole, we're leaving the message to the other prisoners, to the other suspects that it's alright to shoot a police officer and then it's okay to see if you can get two-thirds of your sentence deleted."

Logan's niece shared her thoughts as well.

"The battle he deals with.. just to get up and down due to pain is difficult.  He's on numerous medications and has been since his nearly fatal shooting July 31, 1992."

Now 22 years later, Bernal is asking for forgiveness.

"I always just hope and pray that one day, they'll forgive me and I do humbly apologize for the crime that I committed."

The clemency board denied Bernal's request.
