PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Bond is set at $1 million for the woman who opened fire on two men outside a Phoenix sports bar over the weekend near 15th Street and Bethany Home Road.

One of the men died later at a hospital while the other is expected to recover.

What a stunning turn of events -- 32-year-old Thomas Marcussen was killed.  His friend James Swain was wounded outside the Zipps Sports Grill early Saturday morning.  By all accounts, the two friends were just sitting on a bench.

Why did 29-year-old Jessica Wood of Phoenix walk up to the sports bar before 1 a.m. and open fire on two men sitting on a bench, killing one of them?

Answer: We still don't know.

Wood was in court Monday morning for her initial appearance.

She said little.

Marcussen's brother addressed the judge, saying his family is forever changed without Thomas.

"A best friend, a son, boyfriend, an uncle and in-law and he's gone.  He's taken for a random senseless act of violence," he said.

Police say Wood walked up to the men with a semi-automatic handgun, took a shooting stance and opened fire.  They also say she appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Did the men know Wood?

The police report says the two men had been at another bar earlier in the day which is across the street from Zipps.  They got into some kind of altercation with two people there, one fit the description of Jessica Wood.

"One of the customers asked Toni, my bartender, to get away from them, so Toni escorted her to the door, so she walked out and walked to the south and that was it and 45 minutes later, someone said there was a shooting at Zipps," said C.J. Talley of C.J. Talley's Pub.

The shooting has shaken the businesses in the area which has recently drawn several new restaurants and bars.

"16th Street and Bethany is a really nice corner and stuff like this shouldn't happen. Not here, not anywhere," said Talley.

Statement from Zipps Sports Grill:

"It goes without saying that we are incredibly saddened for all involved as well as their families. We have no involvement of this unfortunate incident, other than the shooting occurred in front of our location. Several of our patrons bravely disarmed the female after hearing the shots fired, and we admire them for their courage displayed that night."

Wood is due in court again March 28th for a status conference.  She's facing attempted first-degree murder and first-degree murder charges.
