DC centenarians honored at luncheon

Posted: Updated:

With just a week until the primary election in the District, many people have their minds on the future of D.C. But as residents look forward, we wanted to get advice and guidance from those who have the most experience in the past. A birthday party was held for 40 centenarians Monday and many of them have lived in D.C. for most of their lives.

They may not be getting around as easily as they once did, but these centenarians enjoy talking about the past -- especially their secrets to a long life. Here is what some said:

“Married to a good woman.”

“I think just taking it easy and living good.”

“I just took things as it came. I didn't have any serious illness.”

Many of these older folks have lived in D.C. for a very long time. They have seen riots, a mayor sent to jail, and the highest murder rate in the country. But they have also seen a city that has turned around for the better.

“As they say -- you have to take the bitter with the sweet,” said Virginia Maclauren.

Most have their eye on the upcoming mayoral election and believe whoever leads next has to address lingering issues.

Do they believe the city is on a good path?

“I think we are, but think of all the poor we have,” Alyce Dixon said. “We have so many that need help. Try to help somebody else.”

As they celebrate each year after 100, many prefer to remember the good times in the past and be optimistic about the future. Maclauren seems to have the best advice for all of us.

“Just be good to people,” she said. “Treat everybody like you want to be treated. You don't want to be treated bad. Don’t you treat people bad.”
