Officials investigate Dawson Co. house explosion

Posted: Updated:

An apparent gas explosion blew a Dawson County home apart and set the remains on fire for several hours as firefighters worked to get it under control on Thursday.

According to Dawson County authorities, the explosion happened around 12:20 p.m. on Wildwood Court. They say neighbors called 911 reporting it.

The homeowner's boyfriend says he is thankful they were not home at the time of the fire, but was devastated by the loss.

The early afternoon explosion really rocked the community and the home is essentially collapsed and pancaked into the basement.

Charlie Gardner lived in the home with his girlfriend Nancy. He says they had just remodeled the home and put it on the market. Now, the home is destroyed.

Firefighters from both Dawson and Forsyth counties battled the blaze in the remains of the 2,000 square foot home. They say they had problems fighting the fire due to the lack of water mains in the rural area.

Fire investigators believe this was a gas explosion, but are continuing to investigate. Inspectors for Georgia's Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner will be out Friday surveying the damage.
