Health threats posed by common cold medications

Posted: Updated:
Common cold medications may pose health threats.

Researchers in New Zealand say over-the-counter sinus and pain remedies that combine two common ingredients might cause serious side effects such as high blood pressure, dizziness and tremors.

These side effects occur because acetaminophen, which is the main ingredient in Tylenol, boosts the effects of phenylephrine.

products containing this drug combination include Tylenol Sinus, Sudafed PE Sinus, Benadryl Allergy Plus Sinus and Excedrin Sinus Headache.
