NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Supporters of parks and open spaces in New York City celebrated a big court victory.

A New York University redevelopment project would have destroyed several parks in Greenwich Village.

But a judge ruled Mercer Playground, LaGuardia Corner Gardens, and LaGuardia Park are city parkland and cannot be built over.

The celebration also kicked off, Save Our Parks week.

Advocates want city officials to preserve and expand green spaces in all five boroughs.

Meanwhile, a “Victory for Parks” Party and Rally to celebrate the ruling and raise parks awareness was held on Saturday at LaGuardia Park near the Fiorello LaGuardia statue.

In addition to hundreds of park advocates, those in attendance included Reps. Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, as well as Assembly Member Deborah Glick, Public Advocate Letitia James, and NY City Council Member Corey Johnson, among other officials; and a number of celebrities as well.
