Malaysia Denies Reports Missing Plane May Have Kept Flying

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

There are new twists in the case of the missing Malaysia Airways jetliner.

Reports, including by the Wall Street Journal, said the plane's engines continued to send data to the manufacturer hours after the flight last made contact, perhaps for four or five hours after losing contact.

The reports were said to be based on data from automatic downloads and transmissions from the plane's engines.

But the Malaysian government is denying this – a transport minister called the new information "inaccurate" – so the reports have apparently turned out to be more false hope.

All of this comes after Chinese satellite images showed what was believed to be debris from the missing plane, objects floating near the plane's scheduled flight path off the southern tip of Vietnam. A further examination of the site turned up nothing.

Despite these setbacks, authorities continue to search for the jet, focusing on both the east and west coasts of Malaysia, including the Strait of Malacca.

The developments offer little relief to the relatives of the 239 on board.

Family members say they are desperate for more information on what happened to their loved ones.

Malaysian officials are now asking nearby countries for radar data and expanding their search into the Andaman Sea, FOX's David Piper reported from Bangkok.
