A very cold and strong wind left some residents in the dark and caused damage to homes in the region overnight.

Power crews were out all night trying to restore power service.

The hardest hit areas were in northern Virginia – but Maryland and the District experienced problems as well.

In Silver Spring, Md., a large tree fell onto the roof of a home on Sandalwood Lane around 4 a.m. No one was injured.

Later in the afternoon in Alexandria, Va., bricks from a building’s wall fell – damaging several cars and forcing residents out into the cold while the damaged was repaired. Authorities are investigating to see if wind was to blame.
