Local restaurant gives couple booted from McDonalds free "scrunch" for life

Posted: Updated:
CULPEPER, Va. - They say there's no such thing as a free lunch, but 80-somethings Carl and Barbara Becker have earned it.  The elderly Virginia couple was kicked out of a McDonald's for staying too long, but now, they've got a new place to have their "scrunch."

The Beckers say they were booted out of a McDonald's restaurant in Culpeper because they stayed longer than they should.  The couple says they were only there about 30 minutes.  It didn't take long at all for their story to spread.

Shawn Moss, who owns Shawn's Smokehouse BBQ in Culpeper, heard their story and wanted to do something.  He had never met the Beckers, but he remembered that Carl, a World War II veteran, and his wife Barbara like to eat somewhere between lunch and supper-- hence the name, "scrunch."

It turns out scrunch is pretty catchy.  So, Shawn decided that one day a week-- for life-- he'll treat the Beckers to scrunch.  He says he plans to take it a step further and offer free coffee to all seniors and veterans each Wednesday-- when his restaurant will have its own Scrunch Day.

Moss says he feels so strongly about customer service that at closing time, if there are still customers in the restaurant, he won't let the employees start cleaning or put a chair up on a table.  Moss doesn't want anyone who eats in his restaurant to feel rushed.

The McDonald's franchisee hasn't responded to FOX 5's request for comment, but he did call Barbara to say they're improving their training.  He told her he wants her to be a part of that training so she can help them do it right.  She says she told him she's already doing it right, and the training started when she got asked to leave.

The Beckers are amazed how their story has traveled via social media.  Over 250,000 people have already seen the story on the FOX 5 DC Facebook page alone.

The couple got more than a free lunch this week.  They welcomed their 16th great-grandchild-- and say they plan to teach him early how to laugh and go with the flow.
