'Strangers' Kiss For First Time In Viral Video Ad

Posted: Updated:

A short film on YouTube gaining an unprecedented amount of attention since being uploaded Monday is an ad for a clothing line.

The viral video, posted by a YouTube user named Tatia Pilievia, shows 20 "strangers" in a passionate embrace, eventually sharing a kiss.

The YouTube video offers little detail, aside from saying that it's presented by WREN and then stating simply, "We asked twenty strangers to kiss for the first time..."

The 3-minute, 28-second video was originally uploaded to Vimeo, where it eventually became a "Vimeo Staff Pick." A YouTube version is being shared wildly across Twitter and Facebook, gaining millions of views in just hours.

"Here's my FIRST KISS film: I asked 20 strangers to kiss for the first time w/ @WRENSTUDIO and many dear hearts," Pilieva said in a message that was retweeted by WREN.

Another YouTube version of the same clip was tweeted Tuesday by the Los Angeles-based womenswear brand, disclosing there and in the video description its purpose to debut a Fall 2014 collection.

That version's view count was only in the hundreds Tuesday.

The film's "kissers," identified in the credits, may be "strangers" but they're definitely professionals -- actors, musicians, models -- of varying ages and pairings.

What makes the video captivating? A voice in the background gives little guidance, telling the participants to kiss but take their time. Each couple takes its own approach to the encounter.

Some introduce themselves, make eye contact, reach for each other's hands, or take a deep breath before finally taking the plunge, queuing a song (identified in the description as Soko's "We Might be Dead Tomorrow") playing over a montage of the kissing couples.

The ambiguity of the video and its appearance to be a kind of social experiment perhaps led to its virality as well as a ton of feedback on both ends of the spectrum.

One user with the screen name Kameh88 commented, "This is artistic. I'm sure a few of them found out a little more about themselves or the person he or she was kissing. Because on a genuine first kiss the two people exchange feelings, thoughts, and connect on a different level than just talking or conversing. Just wow video."

Another commenter, Illusion28, disagreed, writing, "Giving away kiss to random strangers like this takes away the value of intimacy in Marriage, that's why relationships nowadays are so [bleeped] up. People just don't think !!!"
