DETROIT (WJBK) -- Opening arguments were heard Tuesday in the case against a Grosse Pointe Man accused of murdering his neighbor's girlfriend.

Myron Williams, 42, faces first-degree murder, felony murder and unarmed robbery charges after prosecutors say he entered his neighbor's home in May 2013 and strangled 36-year-old Sabrina Gianino.

Williams has a lengthy criminal past, including arrests in Lousiana on charges of breaking and entering, burglary, battery and assault.

Prosecutors told the jury Williams lived with his wife and children in the attic of his sister's home next door to Gianino, and that he knew when she would be alone to rob her.

"The defendant liked to drink and he liked to smoke crack - and those things cost money," Molly Kettler, the assistant Wayne Co. prosecutor, said in court.

So prosecutors say he went into Gianino's home and took her purse, a laptop, cellphone, ipod and case, beat her and killed her then immediately sold her belongings for crack cocaine.

"He probably had that crackpipe in his mouth before Sabrina was even found. That's how quick it was," Kettler said.

"Being a crackhead and being poor does not make you a killer," said Williams' attorney, Charles Longstreet. "The evidence is going to show that there is no signs of forced entry; there is no sign of a struggle. The evidence will show that alone is inconsistent with a strange African American crackhead coming in and attacking this woman."

The trial is expected to last three weeks and will be decided by the jury consisting of three white men, two black men, five white women and four black women. The jury of 14 will be reduced to 12.
