LA City Attorney's War On Unlawful Pot Shops

Posted: Updated:

At a news conference City Attorney Mike Feuer says,"If a medical marijuana dispensary is seeking to open for the first time in the City of Los Angeles today… it's unlawful. Can't do it."

Can't do it under Prop-D, he says, which requires those who operate pot shops to have started their business before 2007.

Sam Humeid, started his pot shop in 2006. He's proud of how his pot shop is Prop-D compliant. He knows there are those making the business look bad.

The owner of Perennial Holistic Wellness Center says he's "seen the rise of uncontrolled dispensaries in Los Angeles." So, Humeid is glad to see the City Attorney taking action.

Says Feuer, "Our office believes very strongly that the principal goal of enforceing Proposition D is taking those unlawful dispensaries off the street and shut them down."  Of those not Prop-D compliant, Feuer and his team have aggressively shut down 100 marijuana shops using new rules from Prop D capping how many the city can have. And, says the City Attorney, "We've been prosecuting hundreds of dispensary owners, workers and others.  Nearly 300 such  people have been subject of our criminal prosecutions so far."

Humeid thinks the City Attorney is doing a "wonderful" job and getting a handle on what has been wildly uncontrolled for many years.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck agrees and says he is giving Feuer more manpower to better do his job. 165 senior lead officers will be at his disposal.

And, one more thing: the chief and Feuer  are enlisting the help of realtors who rent to pot shop owners so they don't unlawfully rent to someone.

It's the latest effort by Feuer to crack down on pot shops.
