Cass Tech QB Jayru Campbell in court on assault charge

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- A Detroit high school football star accused of body-slamming a school guard to the ground has made his first appearance in trial court.

Jayru Campbell's appearance Monday was routine, and a not-guilty plea was entered. He's charged with assault for an incident that occurred in January at Cass Technical High School.

Prosecutors say the guard was slammed to the ground after Campbell refused to follow school policy and pull a hood off his head. The confrontation was recorded on video.

The 17-year-old Campbell has said he will play for Michigan State University in 2015. Many friends in court wore MSU clothing. Campbell led Cass Tech to state championships in 2011 and 2012.
