GOP Senate candidates will meet in Macon debate

Posted: Updated:

MACON, Ga. (AP) - The crowded field of Republican U.S. Senate candidates is gathering on the same stage again.

They'll continue a series of debates Saturday evening in Macon.

Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss is retiring.

Candidates include three congressmen: Paul Broun of Athens, Phil Gingrey of Marietta and Jack Kingston of Savannah. Former Secretary of State Karen Handel and businessman David Perdue also are running.

The congressmen all tout their records as proof they'd be a reliably conservative vote. Handel, who ran for governor in 2010, says she has practical government experience without the taint of serving in an unpopular Congress. Perdue, a cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue, pitches himself as the true outsider.

The primary is May 20, with a likely runoff July 22.

The nominee likely will face Democrat Michelle Nunn.
