Subway panhandler crackdown

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The NYPD is putting the "broken windows" theory to work: by tackling smaller crimes, you prevent greater crimes from happening. It's an approach embraced by NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.

Since the beginning of the year through March 2, arrests of panhandlers in the New York City subway system has tripled compared to the same period last year.

There were 274 panhandling arrests compared to 90 last year, according to police.

Cops have also issued more summonses to fair evaders.

Also, stop-and-frisks --- where police stop, question and frisk an individual- are down 96 percent, according to the NYPD.

There were 353 stop-and-frisks this year versus 5,983 during the same time period in 2013.
