PHILADELPHIA -

A former mounted police officer found himself on the wrong side of the law when he was arrested and charged with sexual assault involving a teenage girl.

The teen rode horses at the stables in Andorra where Sasse, 75, was the manager.

"I spoke with his wife of 47 years who assured me that she has no idea where these charges would come from," Sasse's attorney, Anthony Voci Jr., told FOX 29 News.

Sasse, who spent 20 years on the city police force, is facing a long list of charges after his arrest Wednesday. An investigation found he had sexual contact with the girl after she started riding at the Courtesy Stables back in June 2011, when she was just 15.

"We were caught completely off guard by this," Voci said. "By all accounts he's a wonderful guy."

Sasse's lawyer says investigators served search warrants at Sasse's home in Roxborough and at the stables on Wednesday.

"They took some papers and some computers from the home. At this point I haven't received an inventory on all the items taken," Voci said.

Pictures of Sasse are posted all over the stables' Facebook page, showing the veteran officer on horseback years ago with the mounted police and with his favorite horse.

No one at the stables wanted to comment Thursday, and our calls there went unanswered.

"My client, Mr. Sasse, and every person that is arrested enjoys the presumption of innocence," Voci said.

Sasse faces charges of unlawful contact with a minor, forcible compulsion, aggravated indecent assault, sexual assault, corruption of minors, indecent exposure, indecent assault and simple assault.

Bail was set at $50,000.

Schratwieser will have live reports coming up on the FOX 29 News at 5 & 6.
