Cops track down smash-and-grab suspect using stolen item's tracking device

Posted: Updated:

A Radio Shack store in Marlow Heights was the target this time. Prince George's County police say two thieves broke into the store around 2:05 a.m. and fled with an undisclosed amount of property.

A source tells FOX 5 at least one of the items the bandits made off with had a tracking device. So police were able to track the suspects across the Prince George's County line to 49th and Jay Streets in Northeast D.C.

Nobody from Radio Shack would comment, but next door at Mozingo's Sport Apparel store, the owner was upset about the break-in.

"It's just terrible that people can't have a business and try to make a living," Janet Mozingo said.

This is the most recent in a rash of smash-and-grabs around the region -- in Montgomery, Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties.

During some of the burglaries, surveillance video captured the action on tape. A lot of the break-ins have been in Montgomery County, and county police said their officers did respond Thursday morning to the incident in the District. But they say it is too early to know if this latest break-in is related to all the others.
