FOX 5 gets tour of new Marriott Marquis convention center hotel in downtown DC

WASHINGTON -

If you have driven through downtown D.C. over the last year, you couldn't have missed the massive Marriott Marquis convention center hotel under construction. It has been rising up and almost complete.

With nearly 1,200 hundred rooms, it will be D.C.’s largest. It is expected to drive tourism and employ more than 6,000 workers.

FOX 5 was invited along for a first television tour of the building.

The clock is ticking and there is still so much to do. Two shifts a day and 1,100 workers are spread out. It is a frenzy of activity putting the finishing touches on a project first planned over a decade ago.

“We're standing in the Marquis Ballroom, which is our 31,000 square-foot ballroom in the hotel,” said David Marriott. “It's the largest freestanding ballroom hotel in the city.”

He gave our cameras a first look at a hotel that will provide 105,000 square feet of meeting space.

His grandparents began the family business not far from here. They opened a root beer stand on 14th Street in 1927. That led to an international hotel empire.

But the family has always considered the D.C. area home and this hotel is special.

“We're very proud of this hotel and what it means to the city, what it means to the community and what it means to the people of the District,” said Marriott.

The hotel will provide more than 600 jobs -- mostly to D.C. residents. And the demand for those jobs has been overwhelming.

“Here we are 50 feet underground and yet we have natural light from the street coming down in this space,” said general manager David Nadeau. “We're the only hotel in the city that’s got this type of look.”

Most of the 1,200 rooms are already furnished. Views are important here with floor-to-ceiling windows in each room.

The massive kitchen is done. It has to be able to turn out thousands of meals each day.

“We really could start cooking next week,” said Nadeau.

But the “wow” factor here is the lobby.

“This is the first visual you have when you walk into the hotel,” Nadeau said. “It's a great sense of arrival.”

The sculpture that will greet guests as they walk in is called ‘The birth of the American flag.” Its total weight is 27,000 pounds. Above it is a glass ceiling and natural light will pour into rooms and lobby below.

This building is enormous here along Massachusetts Avenue. Because of height restrictions, it could only go up 15 floors. To maximize space, the developer decided to dig down as far as the building is tall.

And underground, you will find three massive ballrooms. On cold or rainy days, guests will be warm and dry as a walkway connects the hotel to the convention center underneath 9th Street.

The plan is to have the D.C.’s largest hotel open on May 1. The first booked convention here is two days later.

The Marriott is still taking applications for job opportunities at the hotel. If you are interested, go to http://www.marriott.com/careers
