South Fork Residents Find Out What's Next For Neighborhood in Ruins

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of homeowners at the South Fork Town homes came for an update from Ewing Township Officials as to when they'll be able to return to their homes. Some found out it could be more than a year.

Homeowners filed out of a closed door meeting with township officials to find out what is next for their South Fork neighborhood that's left in ruins.

Bill Kauffman and his wife Linda's home had extensive damage. They were able to into their home for a short time to get some belongings. They consider themselves lucky. They were neighbors with resident Linda Cerritelli the 62-year old employee of Johnson and Johnson who was killed in the explosion.

"She woke up yesterday morning just like I did thinking she's going to go about her business… and her business is done now," Linda Coles-Kauffman said.

Some residents are not happy with the answers they're getting as to a cause.

"I believe pro total was missed. Gas was smelled far enough in advance that the bells should have rang at town hall or PSE &G and evacuations should have started," Homeowner Nelson Meneses said.

Today PSE&G tried to answer questions .The spokesperson for the utility company still won't say what caused the explosion, but says a subcontractor was working in the area before the blast and reported something was wrong more than an hour before the blast.

"We don't know exactly what caused the accident or exact timelines of events," Mike Gaffney of PSE&G said. "We have worked with Henkel's and McCoy for a long time we have a long standing relationship with them they've done good work for us and we have not have any previous incidents."

Even the town's mayor who now says 15 homes most likely will be razed wants more answers.

"I'm a little bit disappointed on how long it's taken to find the actual cause but I just want to be sure were absolutely sure the information we get is the right information," Mayor Bert Steinmann said.

Township Officials also say the investigation at the explosion site is completed. The massive clean-up begins in the morning.
