Snow plowing accident leaves hundreds in the dark in Bethesda

BETHESDA, Md. -

A bizarre accident in Bethesda left dozens of people trapped behind live power lines and hundreds of others in the dark.

FOX 5 was on the scene when it all happened as we were covering a snow day story inside a bar when all of a sudden, a dump truck with an attached plow starts coming down Cordell Avenue with its plow raised.

The next thing we heard was an explosion as the plow snagged power lines, snapped a power pole, and sent live wires raining down on the road. Live power lines were draped across the sidewalk and on cars on the street after the accident.

According to Pepco, the incident left around 700 people without power.

Some of those affected included people enjoying their snow day inside the popular bar, Caddies. They were not only left in the dark, but for some time, were also trapped inside after firefighters forced them to stay there and away from the downed live wires.

“There were sparks and everything outside,” said customer J.J. McGrath. “It was crazy. You could see all the wires go out and then people start warning you to the fact don't go out there. So it was pretty wild.”

Pepco says the people and businesses without power should all be back online.

As for the driver of the dump truck, he stopped for a few minutes after the accident, but never got out, then drove off from the scene.

Police are investigating to figure out who that driver is.
