CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The FBI is investigating the robbery of a bank branch at a Jewel/Osco in the Southeast Side South Deering neighborhood Monday afternoon.

The bank, inside the Jewel grocery at 1655 E. 95th St., was robbed about noon, FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde said in a statement. The suspect, believed to be in his late 20's, walked up to a teller window and showed the teller a note that said he was armed, Hyde said.

The employee gave the man cash, and he ran out, leaving behind a backpack, Hyde said. The backpack was investigated by the Chicago Police Bomb and Arson Unit, but the scene has now been declared safe, Hyde and Chicago Police said.

The suspect is believed to be a 5-foot-2 to 5-foot-3 black man, 135-145 pounds, wearing a tan winter coat and a black skull cap, Hyde said.

Anyone with information should contact the FBI at (312) 421-6700.
