SB1062 Veto Reaction: Rep Kavanaugh responds

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

State Representative John Kavanaugh was also one SB1062's leading supporters. He said he supported the bill because it had quote "excellent motives". Kavanaugh said that in the end it became a public relations nightmare.

Rep. Kavanaugh said the original intent the bill was to update a 1993 civil rights law that set the standards for when a business owner can deny service to someone based on religious beliefs.

SB1062 was intended to defend owners and companies against civil law suits that the 1993 law did not protect.

Kavanaugh said the bill was not properly presented by those who put it together and that opponents purposely misrepresented it.

"It was never intended to let somebody not serve coffee to somebody because they were gay in a Starbucks or anything like that. It was just meant to update those things, not to change the criteria of who can claim protection... but it was complex, it was misportrayed, and people thought it was a bill that was designed to use the law to discriminate against people especially gays and that was ever the case" said Rep. Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh said if the authors of SB1062 try to pass a similar bill in the future he hopes that they will draft it with the other side in mind and get the wording worked out together but he doesn't expect to see a new bill anytime soon.
