Holocaust survivor struck, killed by school bus in Silver Spring

SILVER SPRING, Md. -

Montgomery County police have identified the man who was struck by a school bus Wednesday afternoon on Route 29 as 91-year-old Elia Miranski. Relatives leaving his Silver Spring apartment this evening told FOX 5 he was a Holocaust survivor.

An oral history on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's website says his parents and two younger siblings were killed in Poland during the German invasion in 1939. Miranski and a brother eventually escaped.

Collision reconstruction experts from Montgomery County police worked late into the evening at the intersection of Columbia Pike (Route 29) and Tech Road, trying to figure out why a school bus hit the man while he was using his walker, trying to cross the street.

Captain Paul Starks says witnesses told police Miranski had made it safely across the southbound lanes of Route 29 in the crosswalk, paused in the middle, and was struck while crossing the northbound lanes.

People who work in the area complained that the crosswalk signal light only lasts 20 seconds, and they say it is not long enough to get across several lanes of a major road.
