Pay It Forward: The Carrying Project

Posted: Updated:
You've heard it said that the little things can make all the difference, and that's true with this Pay It Forward story.  Kit Jenkins took something she couldn't live without, and shared it with others who needed it, too.

Jenkins is the mom of Devon, 3, and Piper, who is just 18 months old.  She says to say she's a believer in baby wearing is an understatement.

Baby wearing means carrying your baby via some sort of carrier.  Studies show the practice makes for happier and healthier babies and parents.

Jenkins was given her first carrier when her husband, who is now an Army Major, was deployed.  At the time, their first-born baby was just 10 days old.  She says the carrier changed her life, and she vowed to pay it forward.

So, Jenkins created The Carrying On Project last March.  They work with carrier companies to connect military families with quality carriers that they might not be able to afford otherwise.  To date, they have given out just over 1,000 carriers-- at absolutely no cost to the recipients.

The business is run out of her home, and she packs up the goods right at her kitchen table.  She also makes sure anyone getting a carrier knows how to use it.

According to Jenkins, her company easily gets 100 nominations a month, and right now, they've got about 200 families on the waiting list to receive a carrier.
