Chicago's streak of sub-freezing lows comes to an end

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One of the most brutal meteorological winters Chicago has ever seen continues to climb into many different record books.

Chicago's O'Hare has already seen 22 days of below 0 temperatures. This ranks tied for 4th all time. Only three more days of sub-zero temperatures would tie the record in that category, which was set back in the winter of 1884-85 at 25.

Another statistic that began climbing into the record books is the unusually long period of sub-freezing low temperatures. That streak came to an end Thursday, February 20th when the overnight low dropped to only 34 degrees ending the streak at 54 consecutive days, which is tied for 13th all time. The all-time record for the greatest number of consecutive days below freezing is 78, set back in the 1944-45 winter.

This meteorological winter will close out with only 13 days in the 40 degree or higher category. That's incredible when you compare that to the previous two winters. The 2011/12 season saw 50 days of 40 degrees or high, and the 2012/13 season saw 34 days in that category.

It looks like March will begin on the cold side. The image attached is the long range temperature forecast through March 11th.
