WASHINGTON - Eleven days after she was caught in the crossfire of a D.C. shooting, 8-year-old Makayla Darden is going home from the hospital.  Friends say the little girl is a fighter, and it’s paying off.

Makayla was shot in the chest on Valentine’s Day outside the Wheeler Terrace Apartment Complex on Valley Avenue.  Since then, two people have been arrested.

Makayla attends Imagine Southeast Public Charter School.  Her school rallied behind her, setting up a Go Fund Me account to help pay her hospital bills.  The kids collected coins, made cards, and even held a bake sale.  They’re glad to hear that Makayla will soon be returning to the classroom, and say they can’t wait to celebrate her recovery.
