Duke Freshman Defends Her Porn Career

Posted: Updated:

18-year-old "Lauren" said when she got accepted to Duke University it was the happiest day of her life. She wasn't so happy when she and her family started getting the monthly bills for an annual tuition that approaches $60,000 dollars.

As she told Fox 11 in an exclusive TV interview airing Tuesday, "I was getting bills for $4,300 dollars a month and I had no idea how I was going to pay for it. I was sitting in my dorm one day, completely stressed out about how to pay for this. I'm sitting on my bed and said to my roommate, ‘Screw it. I'm going to be a porn star.' I sent pictures to modeling agencies. And within days, I was getting calls left and right."

That launched a new ''career'', as she puts it, as a ‘'sex worker'', her term. And what's more, she isn't at all shy about telling her story, though she protects her true name and wanted us to blur her face out of concern for her safety and her family's privacy.  After a student apparently recognized her in one of her videos, and ‘'outed'' her on campus at a frat party, things got a little crazy. Ridicule and praise, scorn and appreciation. She then decided to write a soul-bearing, if you will, first-person essay for the website www.xojane.com. That appears to be the perfect venue for her. As that website describes itself, it's for ‘'selfish ‘' women and it's ‘'where their selfishness is applauded.''  She says things in the article like ‘'shooting pornography brings me unimaginable joy".  In our interview, she stakes out a position as a feminist, upset that there are those who judge her and think less of women in the porn trade saying "I think it's interesting that people have negative stereotypes of porn stars especially college students, the same college students who call us sluts., don't treat us nicely, are the same people who go on line and watch our content.'' Gotta point there, ‘'Lauren'.

Because the internet allows anonymous and hateful posts, there has been plenty of that in reaction to her story being out there. Others have been supportive. She won't say how much money she makes, but presumably she's paying the bills and has no worry about how this might impact her future job possibilities should she choose not to remain in the field that gives her so much joy. It'll be interesting to sit in on a job interview four years from now, assuming this Womens' Studies/Sociology double major stays there and graduates. She'll certainly get points for creativity in figuring a way to beat the ridiculously high costs of higher education without leaving herself with a six-figure loan obligation.
