Barricaded gunman shot dead in Ecorse

Posted: Updated:
ECORSE, Mich. (WJBK) -

The barricaded gunman situation in Ecorse has ended.

FOX 2's Randy Wimbley is at the scene and says the man barricaded inside the home fired a shot at the SWAT team. The SWAT team fired back and killed him.

We're told one man barricaded himself inside his mobile home at June's Mobile Home Park near Pepper and Southfield roads.

The situation started with a 911 call about a man breaking windows inside his mobile home and cutting himself. A second 911 call was made saying he was shooting at neighbors.

The man has been identified as 48-year-old Billy Joel Woolford.

The SWAT team arrived and, according to Lt. Michael Shaw of Michigan State Police, attempted to negotiate with Woolford for about 45 minutes. When that was not successful they deployed some smoke to get the suspect's attention, and he came out and fired several rounds at the team.

"The officers returned fire, struck the gunman and killed him," says Shaw.

Michigan State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which comes after a rash of unrelated drug activity including a major marijuana bust.

"In that house they found 400-and-something plants. ... From what I heard, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of between $600,000 and $900,000 street value of marijuana," says Mike Moore, Ecorse Director of Public Safety.

What sparked the violence is unclear at this time. Neighbors tell Wimbley Woolford suffered from a mental illness, but police have not confirmed that.

Michigan State Police say completing the investigation will take at least a month. Every member of the SWAT team must be interviewed and autopsy results must be conclusive before findings can be sent to the prosecutor's office.
