Warren implements Pothole Hotline for 'worst ever' roads

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -

A pothole hotline is part of Warren Mayor Jim Fouts' "all out" effort fixing the city's potholes.

POTHOLE HOTLINE: (586) 574-4584

Fouts says the special telephone hotline in the Mayor's Office will be dedicated to one thing - Warren residents reporting potholes. "I am inviting Warren residents to call in potholes, and we will dispatch pothole-filling crews as quickly as possible to the street," said Fouts.

Fouts has authorized overtime hours for eight 2-person DPW crews to "work until sundown." Water division employees are also pitching in, according to Fouts. "They have been working overtime since last Saturday," said Fouts. "They needed Sunday to rest."

Fouts said all of the eight DPW trucks used to plow snow are used to fill potholes.

He has also authorized $500,000 from the city's neighborhood road improvement millage funds approved by Warren voters in 2011 to be used for pothole overtime. "All hands are on deck for this effort," said Fouts, who says residents who have lived in Warren since the city's birth in 1957 call this year's pothole problem "the worst ever."

Fouts said the city had 335 miles of local or neighborhood roads, 65 miles of major roads and 17,500 catch basins. "It's a gigantic effort in Warren to remove snow and fix potholes," said Fouts.

Some of the main roads are county-maintained like 12 Mile Road and Van Dyke.

Fouts said if the county would agree to reimburse the city for costs, he will order DPW crews to fix the potholes on county roads. "This is a pothole crisis so cooperation is needed by the county and city," said Fouts. "The situation is unprecedented."
