Driver of dump truck issued summons after killing Arlington mom

Posted: Updated:
ARLINGTON, Va. - A daily task for many people in this Arlington community became a deadly one Monday morning. Arlington County police say 39-year-old Jennifer Lawson died after being hit by a commercial dump truck while putting her child into their minivan.

The whole accident happened right in front of the Maheen home, and they tell us they stopped in their tracks after hearing a loud crash.

"I went and looked outside and saw that there was more than just vehicle damage, so I went outside to make sure someone called 911," Michael Maheen said.

The Maheens tell us this isn't the first time people in this area have heard of someone being hit, but they have never seen an accident this severe.

"We see that there is quite a lot of very fast traffic,” Sue Maheen said. “And it is a very narrow road because they park on both sides of the road.”

But with Lawson being the same age as their own daughter, they are thinking about Lawson’s kids and family.

"Our hearts are very, very strongly warmed with our thoughts and prayers to this family. And we are so sorry for this tragic loss," Sue Maheen said.

"Really sad for the whole family," said Michael.

The Arlington County Police Department has completed their investigation into the fatal accident and issued the driver of the commercial dump truck, 33-year-old Marvin Valladares, a summons for failure to pay full time and attention.
