Shooting at Oheka Castle

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police are investigating a shooting at the famous 127-room Oheka Castle in Huntington, Long Island. Cops are looking for a masked gunman, although no eyewitnesses to the shooting have come forward.

Gary Melius, 69, the property's owner, was shot in the head as he was getting into his car, according to officials. His daughter drove him to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police said they do not have a motive for the shooting.

Melius, who lives on the estate, is politically active in the community. Hours after the shooting, Frank MacKay, who is the chairman of the Independence Party of New York State and friends with Melius tweeted: "Gary Melius is alert, and joking around - toughest man I know."

Suffolk County Police said Melius was alert and in stable condition. Suffolk cops notified the New York State Police and the Nassau County Police.

Video from SkyFoxHD showed several police vehicles on the property, yellow crime scene tape set up in a parking lot, and a K-9 officer searching the area with a dog.

The property, built between 1914 and 1919, was the private home of financier Otto Kahn. In more recent times, it has served as a luxury hotel and weddings and events space.

Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers married Danielle Deleasa there in 2009. Former President Bill Clinton presided over the wedding of then-Rep. Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin, a close aide to then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, in 2010.

It has also been used in several television shows and movies. The website says that it was used to represent Xanadu in the 1941 motion picture "Citizen Kane" with Orson Welles.

Melius, a Long Island developer, purchased the dilapidated estate in 1984 for $1.5 million. It had no electric, plumbing, windows or doors at the time. He spent the next several years renovating the building, which sits on 23 acres.
