Concealed Weapons Permit: Now Easier To Get In The OC

Posted: Updated:

What's changed? A definition! The definition for  "Good Cause."

In the past to get a CCW or concealed weapons permit "good cause" was determined by the sheriff. An example, if you could show you carried large amounts of cash for work or could prove an existing threat against your life the Sheriff could decide you had "good cause" for a CCW.

Last Friday's decision by a Federal Appeals Court found some California counties are too restrictive. So, now – based on the court ruling  there's a new definition for "good cause" and that's simply that you need a weapon for self-defense or personal safety. That's all you have to say, but that's not all you have to do.

You have to prove you have "good moral character" and requires some serious evaluation. Reaction here in Orange County has been mixed. We found people who hate the idea of people walking around the guns just because they want one and others cheering the change.

Permit applications are available on the Orange County Sheriffs Dept. website. The cost for a 2-year permit is $195.22. You have to be a full-time OC resident and present a number of documents. There are other requirements including an interview and background check.

Since the change in policy Monday deputies tell me there has been a huge spike in applications. An example, the interview process now stretches to May.
