Weekend Roundup: Catalina Island Getaway, Brazilian Carnival & Record Weightlifting

Posted: Updated:

FOX 11's food and fun expert Mar Yvette searches the Los Angeles area for some of the best places to eat, drink, shop and have a great time. Featured guests then swarm our FOX Television Center parking lot every Thursday morning between 9am and 10am on Good Day LA, creating a big party as one jam-packed segment known as the Weekend Roundup!

Here's more information about the guests we featured:

Catalina Island Getaway

Winter is still in full effect around the country, but not here in Southern California! So what better time for a little island getaway without even getting on a plane? Catalina Express offers daily departures from Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point. Even better, if it's your birthday, you can ride free (that's a $75 savings!) and take advantage of 40+ businesses that offer discounts and freebies including Bluewater Avalon, the brand-new destination restaurant that brings you the freshest sustainably harvested seafood. And of course, no trip to Catalina would be complete without a stop at Lloyd's, the oldest candy shop on the island. Make sure to visit www.catalinaexpress.com for all the great deals and hotel packages that include round trip boat transportation.

Brazilian Carnaval

Let's get ready to samba! The largest Brazilian celebration on the West Coast is back with the 14th Annual Brazilian Carnaval: World Cup 2014 at Club Nokia on Saturday, March 1 -- the first day of Carnaval celebrations in Brazil and around the world. This all-ages party is the closest you can get to the excitement and rhythms of Brazil in Los Angeles. Brazilian Nites brings the true party spirit of Brazil with spectacular sights and sounds, food and drinks, dancing and games and World Cup themed entertainment and costumes. Get ready for a fun time. Tickets can be purchased at www.braziliannites.com.

Record-Breaking Weightlifting

It's true: You can't judge a man's strength by his size. Despite being only about 5'7" and 160 lbs, record-breaking weightlifter Richie Arakelian is stronger than almost anyone you will ever meet! This powerhouse has already set many Guinness World Records including "Most Weight Squat Lifted in One Minute" and "Most Weight Squat Lifted in One Hour" and now Arakelian plans to break the world record on GOOD DAY LA for "Most Weight Squat Lifted in One Minute" -- about 10,000 pounds in 60 seconds!!! Since he is Armenian-born, Richie will also be attempting to set the record for "Most Weight Lifted in 24 Hours" on April 24 to commemorate Armenian Remembrance Day. You can read all about his amazing journey from Armenia to America and how he is indeed an inspiration for us to stay strong and pursue our dreams no matter how big they may seem.
