Local Ukrainian community reacts to unrest

(WJBK) -

Protests continue in Ukraine but the president says he and leaders have agreed to a truce. The announcement comes one day after 26 people died, including seven police officers, in  clashes between police and government protestors. Hundreds more were injured.

Detroit has one of the largest population of Ukrainians in the United States.

FOX 2's Erika Erickson spoke with some who have family members in Ukraine.

"My sister is in Ukraine on business. She went there about three weeks ago. It's terrifying to see the bloodshed that's going on there right now," says Andrey Duzyj, who is on the Ukrainian Cultural Center board.

"They are using stun grenades now; they're using Molotov cocktails now. We have live streams showing police shooting at the demonstrators," says Myron Fedoriw, from the Ukrainian Congress Committee of Detroit.

They say they are working with the Ukrainian Cultural Center to send money and medical supplies to the Ukraine, but wish they could do more.
